Yes that’s true.. Practice doesn’t always make a Man perfect.. or to put it better, Regular Practice isn’t the only thing that ensures an individual’s journey to perfection.. to success. Its officially proven now . You may refer the Detailed research paper in Royal Society Open Science Journal here https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rsos.190327
I always felt that ONLY practising something more number of times may not be the sure way to gain mastery or Notable success at that thing. And here I am not considering the bad quality of practice and other factors influencing the practice..
We are talking of just PRACTICE assuming its being done in most efficient and effective way.
So far there was a theory that if a person practices anything for 10000 hours he gains a mastery or perfection in it . ( ref : Outliers : the Story of success by Malcom Gladwell based on original theory Ericsson, Krampe & Tesch-Römer 1993 Psychol. Rev.100, 363–406)
The Book was a best seller for over 11 consecutive weeks as per New York Times and even the crictics had applauded the Book.
Backhome we were also fed with this theory since childhood- much before the book by Gladwell.
- Practice ..practice You will become Perfect.
- Hard work –it’s the Only key to Success.
So when I wasn’t getting success in my studies I was constantly motivated / pushed / pressurized, first by my parents and teachers and later by my own tutored self to study more and more and more so that I could get success . I am sure many of you must have experienced this in your life isn’t it ?
And then came the stories of how someone studied for more than 12 hours daily to pass CA exam or UPSC exam or IIT Jee exam .
How Sachin Tendulkar Slogged for 12 hours daily at his nets to become successful. These stories are definitely true, but does that mean- any person who likes to play cricket will become Sachin Tendulkar just by practising tirelessly for say 10-12 hours daily ? Or does that mean- every aspiring UPSC candidate will pass and achieve success as well if he studies for 12 hours daily for say a little over 2 years ?
Answers seem to be Obvious ‘NO’ but unfortunately that’s what we have been expecting our children to do for generations now.
We Indian public being very fond of scientific research studies done abroad ( however flawed they might be ) , I guess the recent study will be an eye opener for all of us .
While Practice and hardwork are indispensable part of any mastery / success journey , attributing all the success to Just Practice and Hardwork is over estimation and over simplification.
Genetic factors like height / weight body structure do play a role in sports success and other factors like Inborn Talents / Abilities or to put it better Intelligence potential of a person also plays a major role , Rather a Crucial role.
If you or even your child feels in std 10th / 12th ( in some enlightened families even in std 5th ) that he should become a Surgeon or say Aeronautical Engineer or for that matter a CA or any other professional just on basis of the marks being obtained in respective subjects in school / board exam or the Interest being felt then, beware that a crude surprise might be awaiting you few months down the line.
Understanding the Various Intelligences Potential ( Potential of Various Talents ) in your child, understanding his personality , his Learning system Vis-a- vis various specific requirements in that career field ( not exam) is More Important.
Equally important are the activities / courses that convert the Latent Talents into skills which lead to actual performance.
All this is a long drawn process and may stretch from months to years sometimes.
So stop pushing your child into mere – more and more hardwork if his chosen field is not based on is talents and skills .
You are just making your child’s Life More and More stressful. Instead understand that its never too late to take appropriate decision and start walking a life of happiness and satisfaction.
After all you want your child to be Happy don’t you ?
