Neha was extremely worried about the behavioral issues her son Adwait exhibited in school! He had difficulty with impulse control and experienced problem sitting at one places. He was found to be non-focusing on his work and had conflicts with other children and did not wait for his turn either. Hyperactivity had become a part of his behavior and teachers complained that he would call out in class, rather than putting his hand up and waiting his turn, he would also disrupt other children and hit them at times. Compliance had become a major issue with him. Neha and her husband were really surprised! Adwait never exhibited such kind of behavior at home. Neha was extremely upset and the school called her regularly to express their concern about her son’s behavior. She couldn’t understand why he was behaving in this way??
It was seen that Adwait did better at home as being an only child; he received his mother’s undivided attention and support. She did everything for him but had not yet encouraged him to take up age appropriate responsibilities. He was the center of attention at home and had everything done for him the moment he demanded.
Simultaneously he lacked age appropriate skills to cope successfully with the social and behavioral demands in school. He had issues controlling his emotions, could not wait for his turn and wanted instant gratification. He expected to be the center of attention and to have his needs satisfied immediately.
Neha had to understand how her own behavior and parenting style had contributed to behavioral issues in her child. She was a caring mother, but she had difficulties being assertive and setting limits with her child. Guidance and counseling through parenting sessions help parents deal with such situations. The sessions help parents encourage maturity, responsibility and independence in their child at home. Also frequent meetings with the school teachers & counselors and setting goal oriented targets help parents train children on appropriate behavior skills at home and assist with the transfer of these skills in the school setting.
Parent’s awareness towards parenting and effective communication with children can make a better bonding. Ultimately understanding the problem is the key towards solving it!
